Candidate for Pottstown Borough Council’s 5th Ward
Building a Pottstown Where Everyone Can Thrive
Joshua Kagi is a community advocate and communications professional who believes in the power of listening, storytelling, and putting people at the heart of local government. He and his wife, the Rev. Sarah Strosahl-Kagi, chose to raise their two young children, Asher and Ellie, in Pottstown because they saw deep community roots, genuine neighbors, and a town full of potential.
A Life Dedicated to Public Service and Community
Joshua began his career as a legislative aide to the Democratic leader of the Oregon Legislature, regularly working alongside party leadership—including now-U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley—to advocate for policies supporting working families, education, and affordable housing. He then spent a year as the only full-time journalist covering the Oregon Statehouse, ensuring transparency and accountability, and bringing critical issues like education funding, economic development, and government transparency into public view.
He later worked as communications director for a statewide Secretary of State campaign, helping lead efforts to expand voter access, government transparency, and ethical oversight of state agencies. His experiences reinforced a core belief: Institutions don't change on their own—people must step up and drive change from within.
Championing Community Voices
Joshua is currently the senior producer of the PBS documentary series Grown Up Dad, highlighting the stories of parents who struggle to navigate systems not designed with working families in mind. His work amplifies overlooked voices, pushing conversations on family support, workplace equity, childcare, and education. Joshua is also the producer of the feature-length documentary What Did You Drag Me Into? The Flamy Grant Story, about a drag queen who releases an album in the Contemporary Christian category, where backlash from the far right helps catapult her to number one. With her newfound platform, she works to create space for other queer individuals in the Christian music industry and within faith communities, furthering Joshua's commitment to highlighting marginalized stories and fostering greater understanding and inclusion.
In addition to this work, Joshua has been identified as the nominee to become the next President of American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), a denomination with more than one million members. ABCUSA is known for its exceptional political, cultural, and ethnic diversity, making it one of the most diverse religious groups in the world. In this upcoming role, Joshua aims to bridge divides, amplify diverse voices, and advance initiatives focused on social justice, institutional accountability, and meaningful community engagement.
Empowering Nonprofits as a Local Small Business
Joshua operates Grandifi Enterprises, a Pottstown-based small business dedicated to empowering nonprofit organizations and values-driven brands. Through essential tools, expert coaching, and impactful storytelling, Joshua helps these organizations amplify their missions, achieve sustainable success, and deepen their impact in their communities.
Joshua also serves on the board of directors for the Pottstown Film Festival, contributing to a community event that fosters connection and understanding through the power of storytelling.
Advocating for Pottstown's Future
Joshua believes government works best when it truly listens to and works alongside the people it serves. He is running for Pottstown Borough Council, Ward 5, because the community deserves proactive leadership, especially as federal support continues to shrink and local challenges grow.
He has been endorsed by the Montgomery County Area 1 Democrats (representing Pottstown) because of his commitment to leadership that listens, responds, and puts people first. Joshua aims to help build a borough government that engages residents directly, makes community-driven decisions, and translates ideas into meaningful action.
Joshua Kagi is committed to building a Pottstown where every person can thrive. Together, we can ensure our best days are still ahead.
